Dear Fellow Southern Leytenos and friends,
Warm greetings from the officers and members of the Board of the Southern Leyteno International!
Our annual picnic 2013, held last August 10, was a great success. It was well attended; kababayans from Illinois, Missouri, Milwaukee, Utah, California, Michigan, New York and Canada had a good time fellowshipping. The good weather was just beautiful! Games for adults and children were fantastic! There delicious food like lechon, sinugbang isda, barbecue, pancit, barbacua, chicharon, vegetables fresh from the garden, etc. Another table of different kinds of dessert were unbelievable! The prayer blessing was led by Greg Lahmann from Missouri. The “Harana” was sung by handsome men accompanied by our very own guitarist, Elvo Masing.

Dear fellow Members, Benefactors and Friends of SLI, Inc.,
My warm greetings to everyone!
Our fund raising Dinner Dance and Halloween Party was a huge success! The attendance and proceeds surpassed our expectations, and the costumes, dance, fun and games made the evening enjoyable for adults and children alike.
This was made possible through the cooperation, support and generosity of the members, benefactors and friends of our organization. Special thanks to: Mrs. Charlotte Stiritz Nagy, teacher-philanthropist, for her gracious presence and support; the superb rendition of Alpha and Emil Nicolasin as Masters of Ceremony; the representation of the United Cosmopolitan Church of Chicago led by Pastor Hong; the Lucena Association led by its president Mike Fontanilla; the United Dance Club of Chicago led by Ms. Adel Calalay; the Chicago Anklong Rondalla Ensemble under the baton of Ms. Espie Magno; and the Northwest Mont Clare UCC Prayer Group members, among other friends. I also wish to express my gratitude to all the officers and members who have tirelessly extended their support to make our activity a success.
With $9,016.94 net proceeds, we are now poised to initiate the construction of our Two-classroom school building project. We will start as soon as the project location is finally determined.
Again my heartfelt thanks to everyone! May the Lord Almighty grant us more blessings as we share and care for our fellow human beings.

“This is the day that the Lord has made, we will rejoice and be glad in it.” It was a beautiful morning when Southern Leyteno members and friends arrived to the picnic location with sumptuous food. Ilding Piao and his son started the grill for barbecue and “sinugbang isda”. Toting Tagnipez came to dropped the volleyball set and banner, and came back later with more food. Jonathan Carillo did put up the signs. The long table was full of delicious food topped by Ilding’s “tinolang isda”. The lechon was appetizingly crispy. Emil Nicolasin assisted Ilding with his “sinugbang panga sa dakong isda”.
We were able to take a group picture before the passing thunderstorm. While we were in position for picture taking, Toting Tagnipez(member of the board & past president) and Oriel Markines-Carillo(incumbent president) delivered their short messages. The sky cleared after the short storm. We continued the celebration with games for everybody. The winners for the children are Ricky, nephew of Mae Lahman, Erin Jude and Amela Amago. The winners for the adults are Teresita Quilantang, Wig Bitos, Val Capablanca, Evelyn Jude and Jonathan Carillo. There was singing led by Elbo Masing and Lt. Gen. Bonifacio Ramos. Pat Sampan, Helen Requilman,Val Capablanca & others shared their beautiful voices. To melt the food that we ate, we had “Walk for Southern Leyte” along the trail surrounding the park’s lake.
We had 3 birthday celebrants namely: Ildefonso Piao, Wig Bitos and Zenaida Tagnipez. Minya, the wife of Wig baked a very big banana-strawberry cake, leche flan and yummy pork/beef barbecue. That same day Elaine Joy Tagnipez-Williams was admitted in the hospital and gave birth to a baby girl whose name is Jeda Charlize. Congratulations Elaine Joy and Aron. Congratulations too to the proud grandparents Toting and Jenny Tagnipez.
Our thanks go to Pastor Kye Ile Hong, pastor of the Cosmopolitan United Methodist Church, Chicago, for the prayer blessings; Greg & May Lahman & family who ndrove all the way from Missouri; Clarence, Joliet & son who drove from Iowa; Jonathan, Ilding & son, for the set-ups; Elbo Masing for playing the guitar/accompaniment;Lt. Gen Bonifacio Ramos for being an emcee and leading the voice solos; Pong Javier for providing the bullhorn(microphone); and everybody who attended the picnic.
